William's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ellen Warburton. His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. He had five brothers and seven sisters, named James, Thomas, (John), George, Walter, Ellen, Mary, Alice, Jane, Sarah, Mary and Agnes. He was the nineth oldest of the thirteen children.
