Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Ellen Warburton.  Her paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Rigby. She had six brothers and six sisters, named James, Thomas, William, (John), George, Walter, Ellen, Alice, Jane, Sarah, Mary and Agnes.  She was the second oldest of the thirteen children.  She died at the age of 1 in December 1839 in Burnley.³
