Thomas was born in 1840. Thomas' father was Robert Mather and his mother was Sarah Ford. His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Helen (Ellen) Dorning. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, William, James, Ann and Ellen. He was the third youngest of the six known children.
