Ellen was born in 1838 in Ainsworth.1  Ellen's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Sarah Ford.  Her paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Helen (Ellen) Dorning. She had four brothers and a sister, named John, Thomas, William, James and Ann.  She was the third oldest of the six known children.
