William's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Sarah Ford. His paternal grandparents were Ralph Mather and Helen (Ellen) Dorning. He had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Thomas, James, Ann and Ellen. He was the fifth oldest of the six known children.
