Robert's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Helen (Ellen) Dorning.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth Garswood. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, James, Jane and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the six known children.  He died at the age of 72 in December 1877 in Bury.³

‌Robert and Sarah were married in a religious ceremony on December 1st, 1828 at St. Luke (Farnworth) witnessed by John Mather & James Southern.⁵   They had four sons and two daughters, named John, Thomas, William, James, Ann and Ellen.  There are possibly more children.
