Robert's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Helen (Ellen) Dorning.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth Garswood. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, John, James, Jane and Margaret.  He was the third oldest of the six known children.  He died at the age of 72 in December 1877 in Bury.³
