Jane's father was Ralph Mather and her mother was Helen (Ellen) Dorning.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth Garswood. She had four brothers and a sister, named Thomas, Robert, John, James and Margaret.  She was the second oldest of the six known children.
