John was born on December 26th, 1808 in Prescot and his baptism took place there on January 22nd, 1809.1  John's father was Ralph Mather and his mother was Helen (Ellen) Dorning.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Elizabeth Garswood. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, Robert, James, Jane and Margaret.  He was the third youngest of the six known children.
