John's father was John Mather and his mother was Ellen (Helen) Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Henry Mather and Martha Williamson.  Nicholas Croston and Sarah Mather were his grandparents through his father's adoption. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Volney, Frank, Lotie and Helen.  He was the second youngest of the five children.  He died at the age of 63 on June 26th, 1964 in Birmingham.¹
