Elizabeth was born in September 1839 in Prescot and her baptism took place there on July 17th, 1839.1 2  Elizabeth's father was William Mather and her mother was Margaret Sim. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, William, John, Catherine, Mary and Ellen.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
