Elizabeth was born in September 1839 in Prescot.1  Elizabeth's father was William Mather and her mother was Margaret Sim.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Elizabeth. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, William, John, Catherine, Mary and Ellen.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
