John was born in March 1852 in Bolton.1  John's father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Sim.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Elizabeth. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Charles, William, Elizabeth, Catherine, Mary and Ellen.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
