Ellen was born in 1845 in Prescot.1  Ellen's father was William Mather and her mother was Margaret Sim.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Elizabeth. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, William, John, Elizabeth, Catherine and Mary.  She was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
