Mary was born in December 1843 in Prescot.1  Mary's father was William Mather and her mother was Margaret Sim.  Her paternal grandparents were John Mather and Elizabeth. She had three brothers and three sisters, named Charles, William, John, Elizabeth, Catherine and Ellen.  She was the third oldest of the seven children.
