These children Christened at the Wesleyan, Holmfirth (S of Huddersfield), is a different family. Also, John and Mary are born only 8 months apart, considered impossible for humans! Stubbin, is a hamlet comprising Stubbin Clough (cops and mill pond), and two Mills and a Farm on the current A6024. It appears to have been part of the ancient village of Austonley (about 1,000yds West across the fields) in the parish of Holmbridge. Baptisms are carried out at Holmfirth Chapel. Who is this William (not from Lancashire)? Married at Goosnargh. Baptisms at Whitechapel (nr Preston), Lancashire. is my 3x great grandmother. Born Berry Brow, Almondbury, Yorkshire in 18i02, she was living in Almondbury, Huddersfield in 1841 and 1851.

In 1841, Job and Lucy Stocks (both 35) were at Park Gate, Berry Brow, Almondbury with George (15), Susannah (15), Ruth (13) and Martha (9)

In 1851, Job & Lucy (47 & 48) are still at Park Gate with Ruth and Martha (22 & 19). Emma Stocks (grandaughter, 1 yr) is probably Ruth's daughter. William, Susana and Emma Horsfall are neighbours.

In 1870, LIucy was ill and lost her left hand. She died two years later.

In 1871, Lucy Stocks was living in Berry Brow, Almondbury with husband Job (Lucie on census) and grandson George Brook.

I fear you will begin to think us very unkind in not answering it sooner but we have been very busy in the hay. We have now finished with a very good crop and this is the first opportunity have had to set by to your. We were all very sorry to hear your sad and affecting history after the death of your poor father for you must have had a deal of trouble to go through – We never before heard that your mother got married again. In answer to your inquiry about your Uncle- Edward his name is Kay, not Crossland Your Father had two Brothers living in Bradford near Leeds when he left England named George and Joseph Crossland. Joseph your father’s oldest brother is dead, his youngest brother George was a shoemaker but we have not heard anything of him for twenty years. I am sorry to say the letter is lost that we received about your brother William’s death. I think he died at the place you last heard of him, it also stated he died at the house of a friend and he was the only person in the world to sooth his dying friend—if you ever hear or see any one from that part you might gain some information. We have forwarded your letter to your Grandmother and Uncle William and they were all very happy to again hear from you. Only sure of father being Jonathan. By matching all Jonathan Croslands, it is probable that the mother was Betty Liversedge, in which case there are three more sons.

Daniel may have been a property owner, as there is rate collected for Netherthong from Godfry Berry (1798, 1807, 1820) and Francis Vickerman (1823, 1825).
1795 Elizabeth Crosland Elizabeth may have married Joseph Savile 13 Aug 1815, but no matching census to confirm. 1797 - 1857 John Crosland 60 60 It is possible this John (using Highfield Chapel) that married Elizabeth and the John from Lindley that married Mary Wilkinson are reversed (as there is a possible DNA connection for the other John). However, it is only this John that is associated with Highfield Independant Chapel for himself and his children..

The only John Crosland and Elizabeth marriage before Selina was born was in Leeds in 1817. John is a Cloth Dresser which fits perfectly. Presumably Elizabeth was from Leeds. Their son Henry married at Halifax.

In 1841, John and Eliz (43 & 45) are at West Parade, Huddersfield with Thomas (19), Henry (17), Ellen (16), Elizabeth (9), John (7) and Sarah (6).

IN 1851, John a cloth dresser and Elizabeth (53 & 55) were still at West Parade with Ellen (26), Elizabeth (18), John William (16) and Sarah (14).

In 1854 Elizabeth died and in 1857 John died. Elizabeth and John Crosland (both 59) are buried in grave 160, together with Selina Thompson (42), John William Thompson (16) and Herbert and Oliver Crosland (infants) at Highfield, Huddersfield Burial Ground. They are buried next to another John Crosland in grave 159, so is he related?
1807 - 1857 Charles Crosland 50 50 In 1851, Charles and Hannah (43 & 22) were with Mary (12) and James (11). Also daughter Ann Garlick and Alex (24 & 23) with Hannah (11 mo). Also Sarah Crosland (5t mo)

Charles family from Holme, as Charles is buried with Rachel Crosland (possible wife, b.1830), and Rev. Joseoh Broardhurst's family.
1804 - ~1847 Hannah Crosland 43 43 In 1827, Hannah married Joshua Bottomley of Upperthong (the home where Hanna's grandfather Jonathan died). Hannah Crosland was also of Upperthong.

Hannah died before 1851.
1806 - 1886 James Crosland 79 79 There are two possible Almondbury marriages for James:
1826 Martha Gledhill (both of Crossland)
1829 Ann Taylor (both of Crossland)
There are three possible Bradford marriages:
1824 James (weaver) & Elizabeth Pollard
1830 James (cloth drawer) & Mary Clegg
1830 James (no town) & Hannah Cock

Of the 5 marriages (above), Mary and Hannah are likely, and since the 1851 census shows James born Berry Brow with Hannah, this is therefore assumed to be the correct marriage, but which Hannah? Is must be Hannah Cock, as the census shows us that the James Crosland and Hannah Lockwood couple (m.1822) were born about 1800.
1809 John Crosland The last 4 children where Christened at the Wesleyan, Holmfirth, so may be a different family. Also, John and Mary are born only 8 months apart. 1814 Lydia Crosland The last 4 children where Christened at the Wesleyan, Holmfirth, so may be a different family. Also, John and Mary are born only 8 months apart. 1817 Joseph Crosland The last 4 children where Christened at the Wesleyan, Holmfirth, so may be a different family. Also, John and Mary are born only 8 months apart.

Joseph Crosland (23) Bachelor son of Daniel Clothier married Ann Deannley (20) Spinster, both of Holme.
1739 - 1817 Jonathan Crosland 78 78 7 June 1764, Jonathan Crosland of Butternab married Betty Liversedge of Dungeon. Butternam is the Southern end of Beaumont Park (called Dungeon Wood on the 1854 OS map), so they lived very nearby along the Beaumont Park Road. Dungeon Wood Bottoms lies next to Dog Hall and further North are Dungeon Grove and Dungeon Cottages. The Dungeon Turnpike is now the B6108 Meltham Road.

1765-1771, the births were recorded at Almondbury with mother Betty.

1773-1775, James and John were baptised at Huddersfield with mother "Elizabeth". (There was no other marriage between Jonathan Crosland and a Betty or Elizabeth until 1791).
1744 - 1821 Betty Liversidge 77 77 Betty was described as a "single woman" rather than a spinster on her marriage to Jonathan. This implioes she may be a widow or a woman with child. 1714 - 1753 John Crosland Jnr 39 39 ~1713 - 1741 Hanah Breadly 28 28 1783 Daniel (Dan) Crosland Dan or Daniel (when Jonathan baptised), son of Joseph of Hepworth, Holmfirth, nr Kirkburton ~1785 Mary Wagstaff 1821 Joshua Crosland Joshua recorded his father as Dan Crossland, and he married at Kirkburton so must be of this family. 1782 Benjamin Crosland ~1785 Betty Crowther 1814 Rachel Crosland Rachel was living with Mary in 1841. How are they related? 1809 Mary Crosland 1741 - 1790 Thomas Crosland 49 49 Thomas may have had twins Abraham and Sarah on 8 June 1778, but that's 16 yrs after they were married. 1732 Samuel Crosland 1736 Anne Crosland 1735 John Crosland 1737 Joseph Crosland Joseph was head of the family, being witness to his brothers marriages.

25 Apr 1759, Joseph Crosland of Dungoon married Sarah Mowberry, also of Dungeon,. both of the parish of Almondbury. This is probably near Dungeon Mill, Lockwood (now the North end of Beaumont Park and Butternab).
1739 John Crosland ~1700 - 1762 John Crosland 62 62 John's wife is not revealed on any baptism records. He may have married Hannah Garthside (27 Jun 1723) or Anne Brooke (21 Feb 1728) ... or another.

John and Anne (TBC) lived at Stubbin or Stubbing (as shown on Anne and Jame's baptisms).

In 1730 and 1744, John was a Yeoman at Stubbin when Hannah and Joseph was born and a clothier from Stubbin in Austonley for the other baptisms. There may be two Johns (expecially as there are two Joseph's and no burial).
~1705 Hannah Garthside 1730 Hannah Crosland 1742 Thomas Crosland 1743 Mary Crosland 1734 - 1804 Mr James Crosland 70 70 Born 1734, possibly son of John Crosland of Paddock Foot, Huddersfield (near Lockwood).

27 Feb 1760 James Crosland (24) married Ellen Batty (21) by licence. There's also a marriage to Ellen Broadhurst 12 Oct 1758.

In May 1772, a month after Joshua was baptised, wife Ellen died, recorded as "Ellen Wife of James Crosland of Deadmanstone Attorney at Law Houses", aged 33.

James also had a son Joshua of DeadManStone, Clert to John Battye, so several Batty family connections.

Aug 1775, after his wife Ellen had died, James re-married Abigail Hirst at Huddersfield St Peter.

22 Jan 1784, James Crosland of DeadManStone, Attorney, paid duty for Thomas Shaw, an apprentice.

In 1799 Jame's son James Jnr was living at DeadManStone when he married Martha Batty by license.

20 Mar 1804 James Crosland of DeadmanStone, a gentleman died. He has a burial with headstone at Almondbury.

~1685 - 1769 John Crosland Snr 84 84 ~1685 - 1771 Anne Royd 86 86 1744 John Crosland 1744 - <1751 Joseph Crosland 7 7 Joseph must have died young as another Joseph was baptised in 1751. Otherwise, John the Yeoman and John the Clothier are two people. 1746 Grace Crosland 1748 Sarah Crosland Possibly married Michael Haigh 1798, Huddersfield 1749 - 1751 James Crosland 2 2 1750 - 1751 Stephen Crosland 1 1 There are no marriages for a Stephen Crosland (before 1829) and also no baptisms with a father of Stephen or Steven. He died in Dec 1851 1751 Joseph Crosland 1753 - >1801 Charles Crosland 48 48 Charles may have moved to Silkstone with Stainborough, where he married Ann Pontifract in 1785 (or Mary Jump 20 Feb 1776 by license at Croston near Layland, Lancashire).

Actually, on 27 Nov 1791, Charles (37y) married Hannah Oxley at Almondbury. This is confirmed by her Almondbury burial in 1801, recorded as wife of Charles of Newsome, aged 50 (so of a similar age).

In 1801, Charles was still alive living at Newsome when his wife Hannah died.

1767 - 1771 Mary Crosland 4 4 1765 Sarah Crosland There's Sarah daughter of Jonathan (this); d. of William of Royston, and d. of Joseph of Almondbury, and two from Birstall all baptised 1765-67, so impossible to expand family.

However, if Daniel married at Almondbury, then probably so did Sarah to James Hirst in 1791. She may also have died a single woman, buried 16 Feb 1820 at Hiuddersfield, aged 56.
1720 - 1785 Ellen Firth 65 65 1771 Martha Crosland 26 Sep 1796, Martha Crosland married William Crosland at Almondbury 1735 Sarah Mowberry Sarah's was the daughter of Robert Mowberry, a clothier of Dungeon (~1700-1762) and Maria Johnson. Sister Mary of Dungeon was baptised 25 Dec 1728, and Joseph (1730), Elizabeth (1732), Sarah (1735) and James (1737) so it appears to have been their family home for quite a while. 1743 - 1801 Sarah Jepson 58 58 1739 - 1772 Ellen Batty 33 33 Ellen Batty or Ellen Broadhurst.

27 Feb 1760 James married Ellen Batty. There's also a marriage to Ellen Broadhurst 12 Oct 1758.
~1765 Sarah Ellam 1805 James Crosland 1801 - 1864 Joshua Bottomley 63 63 Joshua was the son of Appleyard Bottomley (1772-1846) and Mary Moldecliff. He had a son Appleyard.

Joshua Bottomly of Upperthong in 1827 (when married).

In 1841, Living at Hogley, Holmfirth.

Charles to too young to Marry Hannah Ocley 1791. The Charles that married Mary Taylor in 1798 was the son of James from Kirkheaton (and both still alive in 1851). The Charles that married Hannah Longbottom in 1803 at Huddersfield may be him.

1791 - 1853 Joseph Crosland 62 62 There is no evidence to support William being the son of Charles and Ann. He is more likely the son of William and Annah, baptised 30 Jan 1791

Hannah died in 1808 and Edward 5 years later. Edward and Hannah are buried together at Highfield (Independant).
From the burial it appears that Edward's mother was also Hannah (1825-1899)
