Joseph was born on May 1st, 1797 in Turton and his baptism took place about 1797 at Walmsley Presbyterian.1   Joseph's father was Thomas Crook and his mother was Hannah (Nanny) Walsh. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Thomas, Luke, Dan, Peter, Charles, Nanny, Mary and Ruth.  He was the fifth oldest of the eleven children.
