John was born on July 29th, 1791 in Turton and his baptism took place about 1791 at Walmsley Presbyterian.1   John's father was Thomas Crook and his mother was Hannah (Nanny) Walsh. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named James, Thomas, Joseph, Luke, Dan, Peter, Charles, Nanny, Mary and Ruth.  He was the second oldest of the eleven children.
