John was born in 1740 in Harwood and his baptism took place on June 4th, 1740 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  John's father was John Crook and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Twisse.  His maternal grandparents were Peter Twisse and Katherine Welch. He had a brother and four sisters, named Peter, Mary, Catherine, Ellen and Betty.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
