Samuel was born in 1830 in Turton.1  Samuel's father was James Crook and his mother was Mary Crook.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Crook and Hannah (Nanny) Walsh. He had two brothers and five sisters, named Joseph, James, Ann, James, Sarah, Mary and Rachel.  He was the third youngest of the eight children.
