Joseph was born in 1821 in Turton.1  Joseph's father was James Crook and his mother was Mary Crook.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Crook and Hannah (Nanny) Walsh. He had two brothers and five sisters, named James, Samuel, Ann, James, Sarah, Mary and Rachel.  He was the third oldest of the eight children.
