Rachel was born in 1835 in Turton.1  Rachel's father was James Crook and her mother was Mary Crook.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Crook and Hannah (Nanny) Walsh. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, James, Samuel, Ann, James, Sarah and Mary.  She was the youngest of the eight children.
