James was born on November 29th, 1818 in Darwen and her baptism took place on April 5th, 1819 at Bank Street Unitarian.1  James' father was James Crook and her mother was Mary Crook.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Crook and Hannah (Nanny) Walsh. She had three brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, James, Samuel, Ann, Sarah, Mary and Rachel.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
