Mary was born in 1736 in Harwood and her baptism took place on February 4th, 1736 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  Mary's father was John Crook and her mother was Hannah (Ann) Twisse.  Her maternal grandparents were Peter Twisse and Katherine Welch. She had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Peter, Catherine, Ellen and Betty.  She was the oldest of the six children.
