John's father was Mordicai Crook and his mother was Alice Crompton. He had three brothers and a sister, named James, Thomas, Mordicai and Esther.  He was the second oldest of the five children.  He died at the age of 57 in October 1794 in Turton.  He was buried on October 30th, 1794 in Turton.²
