Mary was born about 1820 in Bolton.1  Mary's father was Christopher Crook and her mother was Margaret Donovan.  Her paternal grandparents were James Crook and Mary Crook. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Cornelius, Christopher, Martha, Esther, Alice and Elizabeth.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.
