James' father was John Crook and his mother was Rachel Kay.  His paternal grandparents were John Crook and Margaret Sharples; his maternal grandparents were William Kay and Elizabeth Shaw. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, John, Alice, Alice and Mary. He had a half-sister named Ann.  He died at 2 months old in July 1785 in Tonge-with-Haulgh.  He was buried on July 11th, 1785 in Turton.²
