James was born on May 13th, 1785 in Tonge-with-Haulgh and his baptism took place on May 13th, 1785 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  James' father was John Crook and his mother was Rachel Kay.  His paternal grandparents were John Crook and Margaret Sharples; his maternal grandparents were William Kay and Elizabeth Shaw. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, John, John, Alice, Alice and Mary. He had a half-sister named Ann.  He died at 2 months old in July 1785 in Tonge-with-Haulgh.  His burial was on July 11th, 1785 in Turton.2
