Both men were Insurance Canvassors for Bolton 1844 - 1879 William Collings (Taylor) 35 35 William was born before his parents married.  His 1844 birth was registered as TAYLOR, not COLLINS.

In 1861, William (16) was with parents and family at 18 Garside Street, West Bolton

In 1862, another William Collings married Esther Talbot.

In 1863 William married Maria Barrow and they had a Son William than died and then a son Jesse in 1864, before his wife Maria died in 1866.  William then returned to his parents, leving Jesse to be brought up by her grandparents.
NOTE: There may be two different Williams!

In 1871, William (26), unmarried, a carter, was still with his parents.  William had left home and married by 1881.

1795 - 1857 Maria Mather 62 62 Maria Mather b.1790, daughter of James and Sarah of Eccles is another.

In 1815, Maria Mather married William Collinge, a Husbandman. William was later recorded as "Collings".

In 1841 (census), and 1843, William and Maria were Occupier of Spring Gardens, Great Bolton (at the time of Happy's death).

Jan 1863, Maria Collins, Widow of Little Bolton died, aged 63, and was buried at Deane.
1790 - 1852 William Collings 62 62 William's father was Samuel Collings (or "Collinge" on marriage).

In 1815, Maria Mather married William Collinge, a Husbandman. William was later recorded as "Collings".

In 1841, William a labourer and Maria Collings (50 & 40) were in Spring Gardens, Bolton with Joseph (17), Sarah (8), Maria (7) and Esther (1).

In 1843, William Collins (Happys' son-in-law) reported the death of Happy Cheetham, nee Barron, nee Lomax, occupier of Spring Gardens, Great Bolton.

In 1851, William (Ag Labourer) and Maria Collings (60 & 50) were at Mason Fold, Horwich with daughters Maria and Esther (16 & 10).

In 1863, Maria, widow of Little Bolton died.
1818 - 1890 James Collings 72 72 Only James was baptised COLLINGS.  The later children were COLLINS. 1821 Mary Collings Mary Collings had already left home at Spring Gardens by 1841, so where was she?  Perhaps we have the wrong marriage!

21 Jul 1844 Mary "Collings" of Spring Gardens, daughter of William a Carter married John Berry at Mawdsley Street Chapel.

In 1847 Another Mary "Collings" daughter of John Collings married James Horrocks at St Peter's.

In 1852, John Berry died and Mary married Samuel Berry in 1855.  Were they brothers ???

In 1862, Mary had a son Robert.  He died in 1864 aged 2.

In 1861, Samuel and Mary Berry ( 36 & 39) were at Barn Court with William, Henry and Elija (15,13,11) and Marys sisters Esther Collings and Maria Berry.

In 1871, Samuel and Mary (48 & 49) were at Barn Street, Bolton with Elijah (20) and Maria (14).
1824 - 1890 Joseph Collings 66 66 Births are registered as COLLINGS (Elizabeth, Sarah, Joseph and George) and COLLINS (Maria and Samuel).  GOLLINGS is correct and on all the census records.

In 1844 son William was born before their marriage.  Births are then registered in West Bolton as a mix of COLLINS (for Maria and Samuel) and COLLINGE (for the others).

1 Jan 1846, Joseph Collings son of William (both Carters)married Ann Taylor, daughter of George Taylor at St Peter's, Bolton. John Bromiley was witness.

In 1851, Joseph and Ann (26 & 27) were at 7 Gas Street, Bolton with William (7) and Maria (4).

In 1861, Joseph and Ann (33 & 34) are at 18 Garside Street with William (16), Maria (14), Sarah (6), John (4), Joseph (2) and Samule (4 mo)

In 1871, Joseph and Ann (49 & 48) were at 20 Dawson Lane, Little Bolton.  They had William (26), Maria (24), Sarah (19), Joseph (12) and George (6).  They are living in the same house and William and Jane Slater

In 1881, Joseph and Ann (57 and 56) are at 39 Apple Street, East Bolton with Maria (32), Sarah (26), Joseph (22) and George (18).
1826 - 1898 Samuel Mather 71 71 In 1841, Samuel (aged 15, rounded) was with his parents and family at Waterloo, Little Bolton.

19 Feb 1849, Samuel Mather, spinner of Little Bolton, son of Samuel married Ann Nightingale. James Brooks, Samuel's brother-in-law (Alice Mather's husband), was a witness.

In 1851, Samuel and Ann (23 & 21) were living at 48 Blackburn Road.  Ann Mather (37, Solomon's daughter) was a neighbour. Their first son John, born in 1849 had died an infant.

Between 1852-55 the family moved from Sharples to Eastern Bolton district between, then to Little Bolton by 1859.

In 1861, Samuel and Ann (34 & 31) were living at 12 Back Haigh Street with Alice (8), Samuel (6), and Margaret (2).  They had a house servant Mary Nightingale, Ann's niece.

In 1871, Samuel and Ann (43 & 41) were at 73 Blackbank Street with Alice, Samuel, Margaret and George (18, 15, 11 & 4).  James Cunliffe and Happy Hamer (22 & 24) were neighbours at 71.  Phineas and Happy Shittleworth, son Samuel (16) and Jessie Collins (grandson, aged 6) and Alice Mather (Boarder, Wid, 82) were neighbours at no. 67.

Samuel Johnson and Jane Bleakley and family were also neighbours in 1861 and 1871, so may be related.

Samuel was a spinner when his children John and Alice were Baptised.

In 1898, Samuel died and Ann a year later.  Samuel, Ann and three others are all buried in the same Mather grave at Astley Bridge.
1848 - 1909 James Cunliffe Hamer 60 60 Father Peter Hamer and mother Elizabeth Cunliffe.

In 1871, James Cunliffe Hamer (22) was a Carter and Shop Keeper, living at 71 Blackbank Street with his wife Happy Hamer (24).  His neighbours were Samuel and Ann Mather (nee Nightingale)
1814 John Collings Named John Collins in 1834 when married and for all the births, baptism and burial records to 1840.  After that, Mary and Williams baptism (but not birth) and Happy and George's births were registerd as COLLINGE (or COLLINGS).

Moved from Great Bolton (probably Deane where they married and wife Sarah later buried) to Little Bolton about 1837.  Abode was Little Bolton for Harriet's burial and all later birth records.

In 1841, John a cotton opperative and Sarah Collings (both 25) are at Haigh Street, L.B. with Mary (3) and William (1).

In 1851, John a cotton spinner and Sarah (37 & 39) are at 70 Turton Street, L.B. with Mary (14), William (12), Edmund (8), Happy (5) and George (2).

In 1861, living at 16 Woods Court, Bolton with wife Sarah and three children.

The ages of the two Sarahs are diferent. Between 1851 and 1861.  Also, James is a step-son.  The first Sarah must have died, and John remarried another Sarah.

John was a Cotton Wash Dealer, and a Butcher when Happy married in 1868, and may have emigrated after 1861, as none of the family are to be found in the UK.
~1813 Sarah Threlfall Bowcock and Threlfall are the two recorded maiden names for a the mmiage in Manchester, St John in 1857.

Sarah Bowcock is in Bolton in 1851 with her father Richard Threlfall (b.1789)

Also, Sarah is living at 10 Woods Court in 1851 and 1861, so this must be the right person.  The 1861 census shows Sarah's farther as Richard Threfall, born 1789
1849 George Collings <male> Bocock 1850 James Bocock James recorded as Step Son in 1861, so marriage to Sarah must be after 1850, and all other children are from another mother (also Sarah). 1840 William Collings No father is shown for William, and birth registered in East Bolton (not L.B.) so may be of another family.  The William that married Esther Wallbank is another, son of Walter Collinge, a Collier. 1826 Mary Collinge 1836 Jane Collinge Left homeby 1851, but back with family as Jane Lomax in 1861. 1829 Rachel Collinge With family in 1851 1833 Amelia (Amy) Collinge Amy was with family in 1851 1834 Esther Collinge With family in 1851 1835 Sarah Collinge With family in 1851 1835 - 1878 Maria Collins 43 43 In 1851, Maria (16) was with her parents William and Maria at Mason Fold, Horwich.

27 July 1856, Maria Collings, spinster, Great Bolton, daughter of William a carter married William Hosdon, crofter of Darcy Lever, son of Luke a carter.

In 1861 William and Maria (27 & 26) were at 12 Barn Court, West Bolton with Samuel and Mary Berry (Maria's sister) and daughter Nancy (4)

William and Maria moved around a bit.  Between 1861 and 1871 their children were born at Breightmet, Bolton, Salford and Longsight.

In 1871, William and Maria Hodson (36 & 54) were at 17 Lark Street, Little Bolton with Nancy (14), Maria (11), Mary Ann (7), Eliza (3) and William (8 months)

John mat have been a widower when he married Mary.

In 1844 Mary "Collings" married John Berry (Bolton RO).  After they married, John recorded the MMN as Collins (not Collings) on his three children's births.  There are no BERRY+COLLINGS births.

In 1851, John and Mary (38 & 29) were at 114 Spring Gardens, Bolton with Sarah Collings (18, lodger), and sons Wiliam Berry (6) and Henry Berry (3)
1856 - 1901 Maria Ann Berry 45 45 In 1856, Birth registered as Maria Ann

There are many Mary Berry Lancashire marriages, but only one Maria A, and thats in Bolton.

In 1874, Maria A Berry married William Greenhalgh at Bolton Christ Church.
1851 - 1893 Elijah Berry 41 41 In 1871, Elijah Berry married Mary Ellen Partington at Bolton St Paul, Deansgate.

Between 1873 and 1886, all 6 of Elija's children were baptised at Bolton Holy Trinity.

All of Elija's children were childless, although John William did adopt a daughter.
1848 - 1891 Henry Berry 43 43 On 1 Aug 1868, Hanry Berry (21, bachelor), a Stripper and Grinder, son of John Berry married Mary Ellen Pasquill (19, Spinster), parents unknown at Bolton St Paul, Deansgate 1845 - 1922 William Berry 76 76 1825 - 1882 Ann Taylor 57 57 Ann Taylor is the dau of George Taylor of Great Bolton, a Spinner.

1 Jan 1846, Joseph Collings son of William (both Carters)married Ann Taylor, daughter of George Taylor a spinner at St Peter's, Bolton. John Bromiley was witness.

On 30 Aug 1858, Mary Collins (dau of John a waste dealer) married Robert Parkington (or Parkinson, also a Waste Dealer, son of William) at St John's, Bolton (the church the family used)

On 3rd Feb 1909, Eva (24) married William Harrison (26, van man) at St John, Bolton

Eva Hamer also married Joseph Parker and had 13 children. She passed away on Dec 1972 in Bolton, Lancashire.

1889 Ethel Hamer 1876 Walter Smethurst 1812 - 1857 Sarah Williams 45 45 Sarah was likely the daughter of John and Mary from Great Bolton, Cotton Spinners.

This is Sarah Williams (not Crompton), who married John Collins or Collings at Deane in 1834.  Sarah was already pregnant when she married John in March 1834.  Ellen was born in August but died 9 months later.

In 1841, John and Sarah Collings (both 25) are at Halgh Street, L.B. with Mary (3) and William (1).
1825 Samuel Berry In 1861, Samuel and Mary Berry ( 36 & 39) were at Barn Court with William, Henry and Elija (15,13,11) and Marys sisters Esther Collings and Maria Berry. 1853 - 1920 Mary Ellen Partington 67 67 In 1901, Mary E (47) was with her son and his wife (John W and Elizabeth) at Farnworth.  Also the other 4 daughters were there.

In 1911, Eliza Ellenor Berry (58) was still with her 4 surviving daughters, all single at 38 Thorne Street, Moses Gate, Farnworth.

She died in 1920.
1847 - 1923 Happy Collings 75 75 Happy was possibly named after Happy Mather, the sister of Samuel Mather. In 1871 James Cuncliffe Hamer and Happy Hamer were neighbours of Samuel and Ann Mather.


In 1851, Happy (Appy) Collinge (5) was at 70 Turton Street with parents John and Sarah (37 & 39) and 4 other siblings.

In 1861, Happy Collings (14) was with parents John and Sarah (47 & 37) and brothers George (11) and step-son James (11).

In 1891, James Rostron (13), now a Rope Maker, was at 8  Bleakley Street with parents William and Esther Rostron.
1834 - 1905 William Hodson 71 71 William, son of Luke Hodson, a Carter.

In 1881, William Hodson (47, widower) was with Mary A (18) and William (10) at 16 William Street, Tonge.  Eliza was with her uncle Thomas Hodson.  The other children were gone!
1856 Nancy Hodson Nancy and John Thomas were baptised together in June 1860

1861 Maria Hodson In 1878, Maria Hodson married William Whittle (Bolton RO).

In 1881, Maria and William (20 & 23) already had two sons William (4) and Thomas H (2).  They were living with William's mother in Little Bolton.

In 1896, William and Maria Whittle were witness to Mary Ann's second marriage
1868 Eliza Hodson "Eliza" was 3 in 1871, born Salford but living in Little Bolton.

In 1878, Eliza's mother Maria died.

In 1881, Eliza (12, niece) was with her Uncle and Aunt Thomas and Eliza Hodson at 2 George Street, Masons Arms.
1870 William Hodson In 1901, William Hodson (28, born Longsight) was boarding with his sister Mary Ann Taylor (39) at Halliwell and their various children from two marriages.

4 Oct 1902, William Hosdon (31) Machinist, son of William (dec) married Elizabeth Hannah Chadwick (30).

1915, There was another Elizabeth Alice Chadwick & Hlexander Hodson family at Penwortham, Preston

In 1881, William (24), Marria (32, unmarried) and all the other children wewre still with her parents.

Maria was born in 1847 and Maria daughter of Joseph and Ann "Collins", a carter was baptised 9 Sep 1849.

Maria's mother died in 1882 and father in 1890.

Maria Collins died in 1890, aged 40 (actually 42)

As well as "Sarah Collings" born 1853 there is also a Sarah Ann and Sarah Jane born in Bolton within a year of Sarah Collings (MMN = Taylor).

In 1881, Sarah (26, unmarried) was still with her parents.

Between 1881 and 1891 there are no matching Bolton deaths for Sarah Collins of Collings.  Instead, it appears Sarah married John Fairclough in 1886 at Bolton, St Paul, Deansgate
1858 Joseph Collings In 1881, Joseph (22, unmarried) was still with his parents. He was a coal carter at 39 Apple Street (like his father).

In 1883 Joseph Collings married Nancy Yates (Bolton RO)

After he married James became a Horse Keeper (groome) for a while, taking over from his mother-in-law, though be 1901 he was a Carter (forman) again.

In 1891, Joseph and Nancy (32 & 38) were at 202 St Helens Road, Over Hulton with daughter Ellen (2)

In 1901, Joseph a foreman carter, and Nancy (42 & 47) were at 200 St Helen's Road, Hulton with a daughter Ellen (aged 12)

In 1909 Nancy died and late the following year Joseph married Sarah Ann Fletcher at Daubhill Wesleyan Chapel, St Helens Road, Rumworth.

In 1911, Joseph and Sarah Ann Collings (52 & 44) were at 202 St Helens Road, Daubhill, Bolton with daughter Ellen (22) and her husband Harry Partington

In 1890, George Collings married Elizabeth Reeves at Bolton Emmanuel
1857 John Collins John was not registered as a child of Joseph and Ann.  He is possibly an illegitimate nephew John's born Oldham or less likely of Ann's.

In 1861, John (aged 4) was recorded as a son and at school.

He was not with the family in 1871 or 1881.

Esther was a cotton reeler, 20, unmarried in 1861, living with sister Mary Berry and her family.

Esther did not marry Thomas Jameson as this Esther was a minor, and daughter of James.  Esther Collins married William Rostron in 1869, and was still a cotton reeler in 1891.  From her marriage onwards, she spelt her maiden name COLLINS.

In 1911, Mary was not with the family, so it is likely she married (aged over 36) or died.

Between 1811 and 1821, 22 Mary Greenhalgh's married at Bolton, 5 of whom were simply "Mary" and 3 at Bolton Registry office are possible (spouse CUNLIFFE,  ANDERSON and HOWARTH).  However, non of these three Marys match up wiith the 1921 census.

There is no matching death or 1921 census for Mary, so perhaps she married at Bury or Elsewhere.
