Richard's father was Richard Allen and his mother was Hannah Heaton. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Allen and Elizabeth (Betty) Critchley; his maternal grandparents were Edmund Heaton and Elizabeth (Betsy) Mather. He had two brothers named Joseph and Frederick. He was the second oldest of the three children.
