John's father was William Francis McDowell and his mother was Jane Mary Westby. His maternal grandparents were Thomas Westby and Sarah Mather. He had four brothers and a sister, named Alexander, Walter, William, Charles and Elisa. He was the second youngest of the six known children. He had a half-sister named Eliza.
