Walter's father was William Francis McDowell and his mother was Jane Mary Westby.  His maternal grandparents were Thomas Westby and Sarah Mather. He had four brothers and a sister, named Alexander, William, John, Charles and Elisa.  He was the second oldest of the six known children. He had a half-sister named Eliza.  He died at the age of 61 in November 1923.  He was buried on November 7th, 1923.
