Thomas was born in 1819 in Wigan.1  Thomas' father was Thomas Allen and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Critchley. He had three brothers and two sisters, named William, Richard, John, Rebecca and Elizabeth.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 60 in 1879 in Hulme (near Manchester).2
