John was born in 1831 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on June 26th, 1831 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  John's father was Thomas Allen and his mother was Elizabeth (Betty) Critchley. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Richard, Rebecca and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the six children.
