Frederick's father was John Frederick Mather and his mother was Ann Bennett.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Sarah. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Charles, Matilda, Ann and Isabella.  He was the third oldest of the six children. He had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Robert, John, Henry, Sarah and Alice.
