John was born on May 4th, 1845 in Manchester and his baptism took place on December 14th, 1845 at Manchester Cathedral.1 2  John's father was John Frederick Mather and his mother was Priscilla Leach.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Sarah. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Henry, Sarah and Alice. He had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Robert, Frederick, Charles, Matilda, Ann and Isabella.
