Alice was born on July 30th, 1842 in Hulme (near Manchester) and her baptism took place on April 7th, 1844 in Manchester.1 2  Alice's father was John Frederick Mather and her mother was Priscilla Leach.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Sarah. She had three brothers and a sister, named Robert, John, Henry and Sarah. She had three half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Robert, Frederick, Charles, Matilda, Ann and Isabella.
