James was born in 1805 in Little Bolton and his baptism took place on September 1st, 1805 at St. Mary (Deane).1  James' father was William Mather and his mother was Grace Thomison. He had three sisters named Elizabeth, Ann and Nancy.  He was the oldest of the four children.
