James' father was John Neale and his mother was Martha Mather. His maternal grandparents were John (Mechanic) Mather and Ann Thompson. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named Thomas, Martha and Elizabeth. He died at the age of 3 in June 1853 in Manchester. His burial was on June 21st, 1853 at the Cheetham Hill.²
