Edward's father was William Westby and his mother was Jane Stockton. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Westby and Sarah Mather. He had two brothers and three sisters, named William, Arthur, Sarah, Elizabeth and Mary. He was the oldest of the six children. He died at the age of 3 in December 1862 in Little Bolton. His burial was on December 28th, 1862 in Astley Bridge.²
