William Buck & Alice Ann Mather were witness to Samuel's 1875 marriage. They married 2 years later. Neighbor: At No. 71 was James Cuncliffe Hamer and Happy Hamer were neighbours of Samuel and Ann Mather in 1871.
Samuel's sister was Happy Mather (b.1823).  Is there a family tie-up?.

James is Samuel's brother-in-law. Relative of: May and Harold are probably brother and sister, births registered at Horwich, children of William Mather and Martha Aspden. Representative of: In 1931, George Riding was a marriage witness for John Bate and Ada Mather's marriage Representative of: 7 Aug 1915, Mary Rigby was a marriage witness to her sister Lily's marriage to Arthur Clayton. 1852 - 1936 Ellen (Alice) Ann Mather 84 84 Birth registered as Ellen Ann, and baptised 17 Jul 1852 at Astley Bridge. but known as Alice.  Then on 5 Sep 1852 she was baptised again as Alice Ann Mather, daughter of Samuel (a spinner) and Ann.  They changed their mind!  There is no birth registered from an Alice Ann Mather.

In  1861, Alice was 8 years old and at school, living with with her parents Samuel and Ann at 12 Back Haigh Street, Little Bolton.

In 1871, Alice A Mather (18) was with her parents at 73 Blackbank Street, Little Bolton. Neighbours were James Cunliffe and Happy Hamer (22 & 24).

Q3 1877 Alice Ann Mather married William Buck (a civil marriage).

In 1881, William and Alice Ann Buck (29 & 28) were at 69 Grange Street, Sharples. with George (3) and Mary (11mo). They were neighbours of Samuel and Sarah Ann Mather at No. 71. Both men were Fireman at the bleach works..

In 1901, William and Alice Ann (49 & 48) were at 27 Holly Street, Sharples, Bolton with George (23), Mary  (20), Lily (13) and William (7)

18 Sep 1875, Samuel Mather married Sarah Ann Williams at St Paul's, Astley Bridge.

In 1881, Samuel was a Fireman at the bleachworks living next door to his brother-in-law William Buck, also a fireman at George Street, Astley Bridge.

In 1891 Samuel (35) was a stoker (i.e. a fireman) at the bleachworks.

In 1901, Samuel and Sarah A (45 & 46) were living at 39 Broad O'th Lane, Astley Bridge with Mary A (25), William (22), Samuel (19), Margaret (16), and Martha (12)

In 1911, Samuel and Sarah Ann were still in Bolton, with daughters Mary Ann and Margaret. The 1911 census shows they had 4 children.
1859 - 1885 Margaret Mather 25 25 After Hannah died, James would have been left with his son John in 1841, but cant be found on the census records.  There was a James (27) from Haslingden with his mother Alice (60), which could be him!

Margaret was still with her parents Samuel and Ann in 1881 (aged 22), but had left by 1891, presumed married.

Margaret Jane Sale (nee Mather) in 1891 was married to John Sale.  This is another, who's parents were Thomas and Mary Mather.
1866 - 1935 George Mather 68 68 In 1891, George (24) was still with his parents after the others had gone.

2 Jan 1893, George Mather (26), a bleacher of 59 George Street, Astley Bridge, son of Samuel Mather a labourer married Ann Jane Bradshaw (24) of 206 St George Road, daughter of James Bradshaw a fruitier.

As well as Ada and Martha born in Sharples, there were two sons Joseph and Herbert with births and deaths  registered in Burnley (for Joseph) and Tonge (for Herbert).

By 1911, George, Ann Jane and their two daughters were back living in Bolton.

In 1921, George and Ann Jane Mather were in Bolton with Ada and Martha B.

In 1931, George was alive and retured when Ada married John Bate.

George Mather of 54 Baxendale Road, Bolton Lancashire died 9 March 1935.  Administration London 3 Sep to Ada Bate (wife of John Bate). Effects £1238 12s 4a
1847 - 1923 Happy Collings 75 75 Happy was possibly named after Happy Mather, the sister of Samuel Mather. In 1871 James Cuncliffe Hamer and Happy Hamer were neighbours of Samuel and Ann Mather.


In 1851, Happy (Appy) Collinge (5) was at 70 Turton Street with parents John and Sarah (37 & 39) and 4 other siblings.

In 1861, Happy Collings (14) was with parents John and Sarah (47 & 37) and brothers George (11) and step-son James (11).
1855 - 1916 Sarah Ann Williams 61 61 Samuel and Sarah Ann were still in Bolton in 1911, with daughters Mary Ann and Margaret. 1851 - 1932 William Buck 81 81 In 1875, William Buck & Alice Ann Mather were witness to Samuel's marriage. They married 2 years later. 1878 George Buck George and Charlotte were living in Chorley in 1911, with son Frederick, aged 4. 1880 Mary Buck There were no children by 1911.

7 Aug 1915, Mary Rigby was a marriage witness to her sister Lily's marriage to Arthur Clayton.

In 1901, Mary Ann Mather was still single when she was marriage witness for brother Samuel Mather.

2 Oct 1909, Mary Ann was witness to her brother Samuel's marriage

In 1911, Mary Ann was still with Sarah Ann and Samuel in Bolton, aged  35, so probably never had children.

Marrieed to Elizabeth Rigby in 1905 and had her father John Rigby with them in 1911
1881 - 1945 Samuel Mather 64 64 2 Oct 1909, Samuel Mather, warehouseman, son of Samuel a stoker married Violet Aspen (confirmed).  His older sister Mary Ann Mather was witness.

5 Apr 1924, Samuel and Violet (43 & 44) and daughter Olive (13) of 33 Turton Road, Bolton travelled to Halifax, Canada on the Cunard ship Ausonia.

13 Aug 1932, Samuel and Violet (51 & 52) and daughter Olive (24) of 23 Woolman Rd off Ribble Street, Blackpool, a dairyman, arrived at Liverpool from Montreal, Canada.

In 1939, Samuel was a Fishmonger & Fryer at Penmaenmawr, Caernarvonshire, Wales with daughter Olive and son-in-law Harry E Williams

18 Aug 1945, Samuel Mather of Alma House, High Street, at Penmaenmawr, Caernarvonshire died leaving £142 to his widow Violet.
1885 - 1965 Margaret Mather 80 80 Margaret was the only child to be baptised at Bridge St Chapel, Prim Methodist Church, Bolton, Lancashire.

Margaret Mather was still with Sarah Ann and Samuel in Bolton in 1911, aged  26.  She married Albert Fairhurst that year at Seymour Road, Astley Bridge Wesleyan Chapel (confirmed by DOB in 1939).
1888 Martha Mather Martha was not on the 1891 census, but appeared on 1901, daughter, aged 12, so may have been adopted later, or a niece (unlikely a granddaughter).

Martha Mather may be the daughter of Richard Mather & Emma Atherton, married 1883 at Bolton, St Bartholomew

1895 - 1974 Martha Bradshaw Mather 79 79 31 July 1926, James Riding (28) of 93 Plover Street, son of Benjamin Riding a plubmber (deceased) married Martha Bradshaw Mather (30) of 32 Gloster Street, daughter of George Mather, Shop Keeper.  Her sister Ada was a witness.

Martha Bradshaw RIDING of 66 Baxendale St, Bolton died 20 Dec 1974. Probate London 4 Feb £6,843.

7 Aug 1915, Arthur Clayton (24) a bricklayer jpurneyman of 171 Blackburn Road married Lily Buck (27) a cotton winder of 27 Holly Street, Astley Bridge, Bolton at the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel, Astley Bridge.
1894 - 1912 William Buck 18 18 Lily and William were still with Parents Alice and William in 1911.  The other children had left. ~1811 - 1875 James Brooks 64 64 In 1844, James was a Widower when he married Alice Mather.  Both were of fulll age.  The same year another James Brooks married Sarah Mather.

His first wife probably died about 1841, and after a suitable time found a new younger partner, Alice Mather.  She would have already been 6 or 7 months pregnant with George when they married on 6-Oct-1844.

Can't find him on 1841 census, so unable to match his first wife and family with son John (b.1835).

In 1849 James Brookes was a witness at the wedding between Samuel Mather (his brother-in-law, Ann's brother) and Ann Nightingdale.

iIn 1851 James (39, Quarryman), Alice (31) and 4 children were at 6 Waterloo Fold, Little Bolton.

In 1861, James (51) and Alice (41) were at 94 Blackburn Road (East Side), Little Bolton with 5 children.
1880 William Rigby William's parents were John (a coal miner) and Ellen. He was born at Haydock.

In 1881, William was 10mo with his parents at Haydock.
1878 - 1976 Charlotte Elizabeth K Stevens 98 98 George and Charlotte were living in Chorley in 1911, with son Frederick, aged 4. 1907 Frederick Buck 1891 - 1968 Arthur Clayton 77 77 James Eatock May have remarried Annie L Rigby in 1897

James and Harold cant be found in 1891 and 1901, but then his son Harold reappears married on the 1911 census, so presumably the family stayed in Bolton.
1889 - 1893 Annie Buck 4 4 1829 - 1899 Ann Nightingale 70 70 Ann left home in 1949 to marry Samuel Mather, so was not on the family census of 1851.  However, Samuel and Ann cannot be found on the 1851 census.

Samuel and Ann had Mary Nightingale living with them in 1861 as a servant.
1826 - 1898 Samuel Mather 71 71 In 1841, Samuel (aged 15, rounded) was with his parents and family at Waterloo, Little Bolton.

19 Feb 1849, Samuel Mather, spinner of Little Bolton, son of Samuel married Ann Nightingale. James Brooks, Samuel's brother-in-law (Alice Mather's husband), was a witness.

In 1851, Samuel and Ann (23 & 21) were living at 48 Blackburn Road.  Ann Mather (37, Solomon's daughter) was a neighbour. Their first son John, born in 1849 had died an infant.

Between 1852-55 the family moved from Sharples to Eastern Bolton district between, then to Little Bolton by 1859.

In 1861, Samuel and Ann (34 & 31) were living at 12 Back Haigh Street with Alice (8), Samuel (6), and Margaret (2).  They had a house servant Mary Nightingale, Ann's niece.

In 1871, Samuel and Ann (43 & 41) were at 73 Blackbank Street with Alice, Samuel, Margaret and George (18, 15, 11 & 4).  James Cunliffe and Happy Hamer (22 & 24) were neighbours at 71.  Phineas and Happy Shittleworth, son Samuel (16) and Jessie Collins (grandson, aged 6) and Alice Mather (Boarder, Wid, 82) were neighbours at no. 67.

Samuel Johnson and Jane Bleakley and family were also neighbours in 1861 and 1871, so may be related.

Samuel was a spinner when his children John and Alice were Baptised.

In 1898, Samuel died and Ann a year later.  Samuel, Ann and three others are all buried in the same Mather grave at Astley Bridge.

31 July 1926, James Riding (28) of 93 Plover Street, son of Benjamin Riding a plubmber (deceased) married Martha Bradshaw Mather (30) of 32 Gloster Street, daughter of George Mather, Shop Keeper.

In 1931, George Riding was a marriage witness for John Bate and Ada Mather's marriage

1877 - <1939 Elizabeth Rigby 62 62 Also had father living with her in 1911 1906 - 1973 Bessie Mather 67 67 In 1929, like her aunt Margaret (and others), Bessie was a Methodist, so married at the Wesleyan Chapel, Seymour Road, Astley Bridge.

In 1939, Ernest and Bessie were at 47 Florence Avenue, Bolton (with no children).  Bessie was a shop assistant the the chemists.

In 1943, Jack married Rhoda Gill nee Gallagher.
1885 - 1912 Harold Eatock 27 27 Had Sarah Ann (18) and Cicely Harrocks (20) with him in 1911 1889 Alice Maud Briston After Harold died, Alice Maude married Wilfred Howarth in 1917 1906 Arnold Rigby 1909 Clifford Rigby 1877 - <1939 Elizabeth Rigby 62 62 Also had father living with her in 1911 1880 William Rigby William's parents were John (a coal miner) and Ellen. He was born at Haydock.

In 1881, William was 10mo with his parents at Haydock.

John was a Coal Miner, and his neighbour was Thomas Hunt, 40, a widower and his brother William Hunt (38) who were also a coal miners, so one of these Hunts may have been her real father.
1918 - 1951 Eric Clayton 33 33 1920 - 1987 Eunice Clayton 67 67 1918 - 2005 Norah McDermott 87 87 1917 - 1987 James Arthur Appleton 70 70 Eunice and James retired and died in Torbay, Devon 1909 - 1987 James Potter 78 78 1884 Albert Fairhurst Albert was the son of Ralph Fairhurst.  Ralph had another son Matthew who is the great grandfather of RachelWilliams700 (who had had the DNA test, but is not in my blood-line).

In 1939, Albert and Margaret Fairhurst were at 15 Cameron Street, Bolton.  They had one child.

Also in 1939, there is Albert Fairhurst (DOB 30 July 1891) married to Mary E with a daughter Phillis M Fairhurst (DOB, married name Powell 22 Feb 1925).  This is Phyllis Margaret, so another family.
1912 - 1999 Alma Fairhurst 87 87 Alma moved down to Sommerset.

In 1939, Alma,  born 31 Jan 1812 was single, living at Wild Country Lane, Barrow Gurney, Bristol, Sommerset, probably in a seamans hospital (at the start od WW2).  She was a Towel Weaver, although living with over 70 other women, so possibly working as a Nurse (or inmate).

In 1942, she was in Bolton again when she married Francis John Haskins and the death record of 1999 confirms her as Alma Haskins and her DOB (also on the 1939 register).

In 1939, Ernest and Bessie were at 47 Florence Avenue, Bolton (with no children). Ernest was a machine engraver and textile printer.
1863 - 1865 William Mather 1 1 1920 Frederick Fairhurst Unconfirmed son (born Manchester, not Bolton).

Frederick birth registered at Manchester, not Bolton, but no other Mather+Farihurst since 1911.
1914 May Mather May and Harold are probably brother and sister, births registered at Horwich, children of William Mather (1892-1940) of Hindley and Martha Aspden (1894-1979). 1918 - 1919 Harold Mather 1 1 May and Harold are probably brother and sister, births registered at Horwich, children of William Mather and Martha Aspden. 1911 - 1990 Norah Mather 78 78 In 1911, Norah was a shop assistant in a tobacco shop.

Norah never married.  She died in Bolton in March 1990
