James was born in 1857 in Walmersley.1  James' father was William Kay and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Greenhalgh. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, Samuel, Esther, Mary and Ann.  He was the second youngest of the six known children.
