Mary was born in March 1850 in Walmersley.¹

Mary's father was William Kay and her mother was Mary Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Greenhalgh. She had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Samuel, James, Esther and Ann. She was the third youngest of the six known children.
