Mary's father was William Kay and her mother was Mary Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Greenhalgh. She had three brothers and two sisters, named John, Samuel, James, Esther and Ann. She was the fourth oldest of the six known children.

- Mary Eliza Kay married Alfred Brodrick (1849-1919). Their daughter Catherine is the grandmother of Paul Scott who had a 21cM DNA match to JMG.
