John was born in June 1842 in Walmersley.1  John's father was William Kay and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Greenhalgh. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Samuel, James, Esther, Mary and Ann.  He was the oldest of the six known children.  He died at the age of 48 in 1890.
