Samuel Mather

Samuel was born on December 9th, 1792 in Walmersley and his christening took place on December 16th, 1792 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).¹²

  Walmersley is North Bury, just 2 miles North of the center of Bury. Francis's death record of 1810 also shows Walm'y, so this is where the family probably lived.

Samuel's father was Robert Madther and his mother was Judith (Judy) Chadwick. His paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Betty (Elizabeth) Ripson. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Francis, Richard, Robert, Patience, Leah, Sally, Leah and Lucy. He was the second oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 65 in 1857 in Little Bolton.³

Death Notes
- The following 1847 St Peters burial record, I now believe is the Samuel wife of Ellen of G.B., who probably moved to L.B. after his wifes death. Both are buried at St. Peters (as you would expect), and this Samuel of same birth year is buried elsewhere, probably Bury.

  The 1847 Lancashire BMD record has his age as 64, not 55.

General Notes
- Another Samuel Mather from Bolton, who's father was Robert, as was his second son (so named after his grandfather).
  
  1 Oct 1815, Samuel Mather, a Fuller, Bachelor, married Alice Greenhalgh, a spinster at St Mary the Virgin, Bury. Witnesses were James Milnes and Thomas Crompton.
  
  In 1841, Samuel, 45 (and Alice, 45), recorded as a Fuller when John was born. Fuller, a worker who cleanses wool through the process of fulling. They lived at Cresent Row, North Bury and in 1841 had 6 children.
  
  WARNING: There's another Samuel Mather who was an Iron Moulder with sons William, Ralph and George.
