Samuel was born in March 1848 in Walmersley.1  Samuel's father was William Kay and his mother was Mary Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Alice Greenhalgh. He had two brothers and three sisters, named John, James, Esther, Mary and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the six known children.  He died at the age of 68 in 1916.
