Emma was born on August 27th, 1847 in Birtle and her baptism took place on October 17th, 1847.1 2  Emma's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Grace Wood.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph, John, Edwin, Robert, Mary, Sarah, Mary, Betty, Ann, Alice and Grace.  She was the third youngest of the twelve children.  She died at the age of 79 in January 1927 in Bury.3
