Sarah's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Grace Wood. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph, John, Edwin, Robert, Mary, Mary, Betty, Ann, Emma, Alice and Grace. She was the third oldest of the twelve children.
