Edwin's father was Robert Mather and his mother was Grace Wood.  His paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. He had three brothers and eight sisters, named Joseph, John, Robert, Mary, Sarah, Mary, Betty, Ann, Emma, Alice and Grace.  He was the fifth oldest of the twelve children.

‌Edwin and Jane were married in a religious ceremony in 1858 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).⁴   They had a son and two daughters, named Joseph, Emma and Elinor.  There are possibly more children.
