Mary was born on June 3rd, 1838 in Birtle and her baptism took place on July 1st, 1838 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).1 2  Mary's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Grace Wood.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph, John, Edwin, Robert, Mary, Sarah, Betty, Ann, Emma, Alice and Grace.  She was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.

‌Mary and John were married in a religious ceremony on May 18th, 1858 at St. Chad (Rochdale).3  They had an adopted daughter named Elizabeth.  The family line is yet to be completed.
