Mary's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Grace Wood. Her paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph, John, Edwin, Robert, Mary, Sarah, Betty, Ann, Emma, Alice and Grace. She was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.

- 18 May 1858, Mary Mather (19) of Bury, daughter of Robert Mather a Fuller married John Ashworth Nuttall (22) a mechanic of Oldham Road, son of Edmund Nuttall, a Shoe Maker at St Chad, Rochdale.
