Alice's father was Robert Mather and her mother was Grace Wood.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Judith (Judy) Chadwick. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named Joseph, John, Edwin, Robert, Mary, Sarah, Mary, Betty, Ann, Emma and Grace.  She was the second youngest of the twelve children.
