James' father was James Mather and his mother was <Unknown>.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Bentley. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, James, Henry, Joseph, Ann, Mary, Elisha and Alice.  He was the fourth youngest of the nine children.  He died at 11 months old in May 1833 in Bury.  He was buried on May 12th, 1833 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).²
