James was born in January 1826 in Middleton and his baptism took place there on January 29th, 1826.1  James' father was James Mather and his mother was <Unknown>.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Bentley. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, Henry, James, Joseph, Ann, Mary, Elisha and Alice.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 4 in October 1830 in Bury.  His burial was on October 13th, 1830 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).2
