James' father was James Mather and his mother was <Unknown>.  His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Betty Bentley. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, Henry, James, Joseph, Ann, Mary, Elisha and Alice.  He was the fourth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 4 in October 1830 in Bury.  He was buried on October 13th, 1830 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Bury).²
